2002 Kilimanjaro
Hmm, Mike has been up 126 times? Yeah, once is good for me.
Home? Home is the last place you want to be 13,000 feet up. Shoot, look
at yourself, standing above the cloud line. Go ahead, go look at the picture
again. Amazing, huh? Crazy, right? Yup, there you are at home on the mountain.
The mountain that in a few short days will make you beg for the comforts
home. Heat. Hot water. Soap. Your own toilet, not some brown stool nestled
in blue tarp. Home would be nice right now you think and suddenly it dawns
on you…If you were home you wouldn't be here, in Africa, on Kilimanjaro,
experiencing what very few people experience. Home? Home is for homebodies,
this is an expedition, an adventure, a once in lifetime experience, and
something you'll tell people about at cocktail parties.
Cut to a holiday cocktail party in Greenwich, you're standing in a small
group sipping a Macallen on rocks, the guest next to you is eating diver
caught scallops from Maine wrapped in pancetta, it's snowing out, there's
a lull in the conversation, you seize the moment "So we climbed,
Kilimanjaro" you say matter-of-factly. "Really?" the group
replies in unison. “Yup" you say, and seconds before you launch
into the details, the gentleman next to you with a piece of pancetta on
his chin says, "Wow, I wish I did that, I've got to get out of the
house more."
Home? You were at home on the mountain and we have the several pages
of pictures to prove it.
