Kilimanjaro: ASI’s most popular destination
Surrounded by Africa's finest game reserves, Kilimanjaro reigns majestically over the East African plains. At 19,340 feet it is
the highest point of the African continent and one of the "Seven Summits." Reaching the top involves 4-days of comfortable trekking
and a strenuous summit day.
Fly into Kilimanjaro International airport in Tanzania. Next day relax watching elephants and other game in Arusha Game Park. Then trek to the top of Kilimanjaro!
This itinerary is designed to give ample time for acclimatization and maximize the chance of reaching the summit and enjoying the experience! The entire trip is 11 days including travel from the USA.
The Machame route avoids the crowds of the standard Marangu route. It climbs slowly through the pristine forest to the moorland zone for our first nights camp. Next day, head for the Shira plateau at around 12,000-ft. The next two days are a scenic traverse beneath the spectacular Breach Wall that offers terrific views of glaciers and massive hanging icicles on the way to high camp at around 15,000-ft.
A rest day is planned here to acclimatize and be ready to climb to the crater rim for a sunrise arrival. The summit is close by and the magnificent scenery in the crater is quite unlike other high mountains. The descent goes quickly via the Mweka route.
Anyone in good physical condition can enjoy the trek up Kilimanjaro. A short medical form must be completed. Many past participants have had no prior hiking or camping experience. With the rest day to minimize altitude problems high success rates have been experienced.
